Kanjurmarg Residents Flag Hazards At Metro Junction

Residents of Kanjurmarg have raised fresh concerns over deteriorating road and pedestrian conditions at the busy Gandhi Nagar junction, where Metro Lines 4 and 6 intersect under construction elevated corridors.

The junction serves as a critical convergence point for Lal Bahadur Shastri Road, the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road flyover and the elevated viaducts of Mumbai Metro Line 4 and Mumbai Metro Line 6. With multiple infrastructure layers overlapping, residents say the stretch has become hazardous for both motorists and pedestrians. The complaints have intensified following the February 14 slab collapse at an under-construction Metro Line 4 station in Mulund West, which resulted in one fatality and three injuries. Locals claim they had previously flagged safety and infrastructure concerns at the Gandhi Nagar intersection, citing broken footpaths, crater-like potholes and haphazard barricading around construction zones. Shirish Daudkhane, a resident and member of Kanjur-Bhandup ALM, said metal frames and barricades are placed precariously near metro pillars in the middle of the road. “Motorists taking U-turns risk colliding with these structures. There are damaged cement patches filled with loose soil, leading to dust pollution. Even the footpaths are uneven and broken,” he said, adding that residents have raised the matter with authorities in earlier meetings.

A visit to the site revealed uneven pedestrian pathways, partially covered drains, randomly positioned traffic signal poles and ongoing civic works narrowing carriageways. Steel girders for the elevated metro tracks have already been launched above the junction, while large pillars stand at key turning points, further complicating vehicular movement. Residents also highlighted inadequate street lighting along the stretch, saying the area turns completely dark at night, compounding safety risks. Pedestrians walking between Kanjurmarg station and Powai reportedly struggle to navigate barricades, road craters and active construction simultaneously. Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is executing the metro corridors, said that a special inspection of Metro Line 4 has been initiated following the recent incident. Authorities have directed a comprehensive physical audit of elevated structures as well as the road infrastructure beneath them. Shortcomings identified during inspection will be documented and rectified, officials stated. The 32.32-km Line 4 (Wadala–Kasarvadavali) and the 15.31-km Line 6 (Lokhandwala–Vikhroli) are key east-west and north-south connectors expected to ease suburban congestion once operational.

However, residents argue that interim safety and accessibility must not be compromised during construction. As metro expansion accelerates across Mumbai, the Gandhi Nagar junction exemplifies the growing tension between long-term infrastructure gains and immediate civic disruptions on the ground.
