Kandla Commissions Indias First 1 MW Make‑In‑India Green Hydrogen Plant

The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has commissioned the nation’s first “Make-in-India” 1 Megawatt Green Hydrogen Plant at Kandla. This pivotal development marks a significant leap in maritime decarbonisation, enhancing India’s global leadership in sustainable port operations and aligning with the national commitment to achieve zero-net-carbon emissions and foster eco-friendly, resilient urban and industrial ecosystems.

The plant, inaugurated virtually by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, represents the first module of a larger 10 Megawatt project. Its rapid commissioning within just four months, following the foundation stone laying by the Prime Minister in May 2025, sets a new benchmark for project execution in India’s nascent Green Hydrogen industry. This swift progress showcases remarkable speed, scale, and skill in action, underscoring the nation’s capacity for accelerated green infrastructure development.

Engineered and developed entirely by Indian engineers under the “Make-in-India” initiative, the Green Hydrogen Plant at Kandla is a “first-in-sector” innovation. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) played a critical role in the plant’s design and development, reinforcing India’s commitment to self-reliance and future-ready port operations. This breakthrough facility is capable of producing approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, providing a clean fuel alternative that emits only water vapour as a byproduct, thereby directly contributing to improved air quality and reduced pollution around the port city.

The commissioning of this plant is a proud testament to India’s progress under its visionary leadership and a significant step towards the nation’s Net Zero commitment. Minister Sonowal commended DPA’s continuous dedication to green initiatives, citing earlier accomplishments such as the deployment of India’s first Make-in-India all-electric Green Tug. The fully Aatma-Nirbhar (self-reliant) hydrogen ecosystem, built entirely by Indian engineers, serves as an inspiration for other ports to adopt innovative and eco-friendly solutions, fostering a broader shift towards sustainable maritime practices across the country.

This project aligns seamlessly with India’s broader decarbonisation goals and the Maritime India Vision 2030, which actively promotes clean and sustainable port infrastructure. By pioneering green hydrogen production in the port sector, Kandla is setting a powerful precedent for other ports to follow in embracing renewable energy and climate-conscious innovation. This strategic investment in clean energy infrastructure is crucial for building resilient urban economies, ensuring equitable access to cleaner environments, and driving sustainable growth that benefits all citizens and safeguards the planet for future generations.
