Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda precinct, known for its vibrant cultural and artistic heritage, is nearing the completion of a major beautification project that is set to be finished by the end of this year. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which launched the initiative last year, aims to transform the area into a pedestrian-friendly zone that will be both aesthetically pleasing and more accessible to visitors.One of the key features of the revamp is the introduction of a “pedestrian-only” zone during weekends, from 5 pm to 12 am. This move, designed to reduce traffic congestion and create a more pleasant environment for pedestrians, has already been implemented, with plans for possible expansion to weekdays depending on public response.
By limiting vehicle access, the precinct will allow people to explore the area freely, without the disturbances of city traffic.The beautification project also focuses on improving the area’s walkability. Cobblestones have been laid along the roads, offering not only a historical touch but also a more comfortable surface for pedestrians. The move towards cobblestones reflects a growing global trend in urban design, which emphasises the importance of pedestrian infrastructure in enhancing city life.In addition to road upgrades, Kala Ghoda will now feature vibrant murals across its walls. The murals are part of Mumbai’s wider initiative to incorporate public art into urban spaces, making them more engaging for both residents and tourists alike.The lighting in the precinct has also been enhanced, with new installations designed to both illuminate the area and create a more inviting atmosphere in the evenings. These lighting upgrades will improve safety and highlight the area’s architectural beauty, offering a more attractive setting for evening strolls and social activities.
The project covers five major lanes within the Kala Ghoda area, with three lanes VB Gandhi Marg, Rutherfield Street, and B Bharucha Road already completed. Work is now in the final stages on Rope Walk Lane and Saibaba Road, which are expected to be ready by the end of the year.Urban planning experts have hailed the pedestrianisation of Kala Ghoda as an important step in making Mumbai a more sustainable and eco-friendly city. Reducing the area’s dependency on vehicles will help decrease pollution and encourage more sustainable modes of transport, such as walking and cycling.
