JSW Energy is making strategic moves to bolster India’s renewable energy capacity by shifting its focus to state-level projects.
The decision comes in response to ongoing challenges with India’s transmission grid, which has failed to keep up with the surging demand for clean energy despite significant government investments. With the company’s CEO, Sharad Mahendra, calling attention to the lag in transmission capacity, JSW Energy is focusing on setting up renewable energy facilities directly within states, sidestepping the constraints of interstate transmission systems. As India accelerates its push towards green energy, the limitations of the country’s Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) have become more apparent. While renewable energy generation continues to grow, the ability to transport this energy from generation points to consumption hubs is a growing bottleneck. This mismatch between power generation and transmission capacity is now one of the most pressing issues for India’s energy sector. Despite ample policy support and substantial investments, the transmission infrastructure has not expanded sufficiently to support the growth in renewable energy production, particularly in states with high potential for solar and wind energy.
JSW Energy, a leading player in the energy sector, has recognised this issue and is actively working to address it by setting up renewable energy facilities in states with strong green energy potential. By establishing these projects closer to consumption points and generation hubs, the company can bypass the limitations of interstate transmission infrastructure. States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, which are rich in solar and wind resources, are at the top of the list for JSW Energy’s renewable projects. The National Electricity Plan (NEP), released earlier this year by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), identifies key renewable energy zones across the country, including several states that will play a pivotal role in India’s transition to renewable energy. These zones offer significant potential for solar and wind energy projects, which can be harnessed to meet both local and national energy demands. Additionally, the NEP outlines the role of coastal regions in states like Gujarat, Odisha, and West Bengal in the development of green hydrogen and ammonia, further emphasising the importance of a geographically diverse energy mix.
As of May 2024, India’s installed renewable energy capacity stands at a substantial 193.5 GW, representing 43.5% of the country’s total power generation capacity. However, despite this progress, the demand for renewable energy continues to outpace transmission capacity, which is exacerbated by the lag in expanding the ISTS network. In response, JSW Energy is prioritising the establishment of renewable energy facilities in states where grid infrastructure is more reliable, and where government policies are more supportive of clean energy. The company’s shift to local renewable projects is also aligned with India’s long-term energy goals, which include achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. This ambitious target is intended to help the country reduce its carbon emissions and transition towards a low-carbon economy. By focusing on state-level projects, JSW Energy is positioning itself as a key player in India’s clean energy future, helping to bridge the gap between renewable energy generation and transmission capacity.
For energy analysts and experts, the challenges related to transmission are clear. The ISTS network has not kept pace with the rapid growth in renewable energy, and without significant upgrades to the transmission infrastructure, the country risks falling short of its renewable energy targets. JSW Energy’s decision to move away from centralised, interstate transmission-heavy projects is a pragmatic response to these systemic challenges. By developing renewable energy projects closer to areas of demand, the company aims to reduce the burden on the national transmission grid while also ensuring a more reliable and efficient supply of green energy. Moreover, JSW Energy’s move could stimulate regional economic development by encouraging investments in renewable energy infrastructure within states. These state-based projects are expected to create local jobs and help foster a sustainable, green economy at the state level. Additionally, by decentralising renewable energy production, India’s energy landscape could become more resilient to grid failures and disruptions, enhancing energy security for both urban and rural populations.
As the country moves towards its ambitious renewable energy goals, the need for an upgraded, robust transmission infrastructure remains critical.
