The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced the operation of four diesel-powered special joyrides on the iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR). Commencing from October 21 and continuing until December 5, these joyrides will run daily between Darjeeling and Ghum, catering to the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the peak tourist season.
The DHR, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts thousands of local and international tourists who flock to enjoy its breathtaking views and rich heritage. Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR, emphasised that these joyrides will significantly enhance the visitors’ experience, allowing them to soak in the stunning vistas of the Himalayas. NFR’s commitment to promoting tourism in the northeastern region extends beyond just expanding its railway network. The organisation is dedicated to improving connectivity while ensuring that travel remains safe, comfortable, and convenient for tourists. The introduction of innovative train services, including tourist trains equipped with Vistadome coaches, reflects this ethos. Currently, five such Vistadome trains are operational in the northeastern region, offering passengers panoramic views on routes to destinations like Haflong, Badarpur, and Agartala.
Moreover, the joyride trains on the DHR now feature narrow gauge Vistadome coaches, further enhancing the scenic travel experience. NFR has also launched ‘Bharat Gaurav’ trains designed to highlight India’s cultural heritage and natural beauty, demonstrating its proactive approach to tourism promotion. Beyond railway enhancements, NFR is also focusing on infrastructure development. New retiring rooms, executive lounges, and rail coach restaurants have been introduced at several stations to improve the overall travel experience. The creation of a scenic tourist hub at the Brahmaputra riverfront near Bogibeel Bridge in Dibrugarh, complete with river cruises and a floating restaurant, signifies NFR’s commitment to fostering tourism in the region.
As visitors prepare for their journeys, there is a palpable sense of excitement among local residents and tourists alike.
