JNPA Breaks Records with 13.55 Percent Growth in Container Handling

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s premier container handling port, has achieved a record-breaking milestone in the financial year 2024-25, handling an unprecedented 7.3 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of container traffic.

This performance marks a 13.55% growth compared to the previous fiscal year, underlining JNPA’s strategic initiatives in enhancing operational efficiency and bolstering India’s maritime trade ecosystem. This remarkable achievement was celebrated during a stakeholders’ meeting, which brought together key players from the port and logistics sectors. The event highlighted not just the numbers but also the collaborative efforts behind JNPA’s success. Officials from terminal operators, trade bodies, and government agencies gathered to discuss future strategies, focusing on sustainability and resilience in port operations. The year 2024-25 witnessed extraordinary performances across JNPA’s terminals. The Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT) set a new benchmark with a record handling of 222,201 TEUs in March 2025 alone, and a staggering 2.27 million TEUs throughout the year—marking the highest container throughput ever by any terminal in India. APM Terminals (APMT) also maintained its robust performance, managing 2.08 million TEUs, solidifying its position among the top container terminals globally.

Meanwhile, the Navaratna Stevedores Terminal (NSFT) and the Navaratna Stevedores Terminal (NSDT) reported their highest throughput figures to date. NSDT, in particular, achieved record volumes in cement and steel handling, with 1.8 million tonnes and 0.45 million tonnes, respectively. This indicates a diversification of cargo operations beyond traditional container traffic, showcasing the port’s adaptability to market demands. The Centralised Parking Plaza (CPP) at JNPA also made headlines by handling 105,850 TEUs in March 2025, surpassing the previous record of 98,249 TEUs. Additionally, the introduction of new operational projects, including the commencement of Phase-2 operations at BMCT and the launch of liquid terminal operations at LB-3 and LB-4 by JJLTPL, have significantly contributed to this growth trajectory. JNPA’s remarkable performance is not just about handling cargo volumes but also reflects its commitment to sustainability and innovative logistics solutions. The port’s ongoing projects align with India’s broader maritime vision, focusing on environmental sustainability, digital transformation, and infrastructure enhancement. The upcoming Vadhvan port, set to be India’s 13th major port, will further bolster JNPA’s strategic position as a global maritime hub.

JNPA’s leadership has consistently emphasised the importance of integrating cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices. The port has embraced smart terminal management systems, automated cargo handling processes, and green logistics initiatives, reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to India’s zero net carbon goals. In the broader context, JNPA’s success story is a testament to the dynamic growth of India’s maritime sector. The port’s ability to handle such high volumes while maintaining operational efficiency and environmental responsibility sets a benchmark for ports globally. It also strengthens India’s position as a key player in international trade, enhancing connectivity with global markets.

As JNPA continues to evolve, its focus remains on fostering sustainable growth, enhancing cargo handling capacity, and promoting inclusive economic development. The achievements of 2024-25 are not just records; they represent a strategic vision for the future of India’s port infrastructure, where efficiency meets sustainability in the pursuit of global excellence.
