Jharkhand gets massive highway upgrade as Nitin Gadkari announces projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore

Jharkhand is on the cusp of a major infrastructure overhaul after Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced national highway projects worth an astounding Rs 2 lakh crore during his recent visit to the state. The announcement, made during a public event in Garhwa, signals a powerful push by the Centre to enhance regional connectivity, reduce logistical inefficiencies, and bridge longstanding infrastructure gaps in one of India’s most mineral-rich but underdeveloped states.

Addressing a crowd in Garhwa, Gadkari emphasized the government’s commitment to improving highway infrastructure across Jharkhand. He noted that national highway projects worth Rs 40,000 crore have already been completed in the state, while work is underway on projects totaling Rs 70,000 crore. An additional Rs 75,000 crore worth of projects are in the pipeline, which brings the total investment commitment to a staggering Rs 2 lakh crore. This scale of funding marks a transformational moment for Jharkhand, which has long struggled with inadequate road connectivity, especially in tribal and rural belts.  During his visit, Gadkari inaugurated the 23-kilometre four-lane highway between Shankha and Khajuri, a project that has been completed at a cost of Rs 1,130 crore. He also laid the foundation stone for the widening of a 32-kilometre stretch of National Highway 39, from the Chhattisgarh–Jharkhand border to Gumla. That project will be executed at a cost of Rs 1,330 crore. Both developments are seen as critical to strengthening links between Jharkhand and its neighbouring states, while also improving road safety and reducing travel time for commuters and freight carriers alike.

Later in Ranchi, Gadkari inaugurated the city’s long-awaited elevated flyover and used the occasion to highlight how such projects are part of a broader mission to lower India’s logistics costs, which had been as high as 16 percent of GDP. He said the Centre had already reduced this figure to around 10 percent, and aims to bring it down to 9 percent by the end of 2025. Lower logistics costs, he argued, will boost exports, attract investment, and make Indian industries more competitive globally. While many of the projects announced are already under various stages of construction, the state is also set to benefit from several newly approved economic corridors and expressways. These corridors aim to improve freight efficiency and inter-state trade, especially given Jharkhand’s strategic location between eastern ports and the industrial heartland of central India.

Gadkari also outlined plans for new roads, bypasses, and elevated corridors in Ranchi, Deoghar, and Jamshedpur — cities that are currently grappling with rising traffic congestion and deteriorating road conditions. These upgrades will not only enhance urban mobility but also support economic activity and real estate development. However, the minister did not shy away from addressing the practical challenges involved. He acknowledged that funds are not a constraint, but flagged delays caused by issues related to land acquisition, forest clearance, and state-level approvals. He urged the Jharkhand government to fast-track these bottlenecks so that highway construction can proceed without unnecessary hold-ups.

A notable shift in policy was also revealed with the expansion of Jharkhand’s national highway network from 2,600 kilometres in 2014 to over 4,470 kilometres in 2024. The Centre has also ensured that all 19 of the state’s aspirational districts are now connected through national highways, dramatically improving access in some of the most backward regions. The significance of these developments cannot be overstated. For decades, Jharkhand has suffered from underinvestment in roads, limiting its economic potential despite being rich in natural resources. Improved road infrastructure is expected to boost not just mining and industrial output but also tourism, agriculture, and trade. Better connectivity will help farmers access markets more easily, allow businesses to move goods more efficiently, and connect remote communities to essential services like healthcare and education.

Environmental concerns, though valid, have been balanced with infrastructure needs, with Gadkari assuring that road construction will follow sustainable development practices. The minister reiterated the use of innovative technologies and green construction materials to ensure that the environment is not sacrificed for the sake of development.

These announcements mark a decisive step toward making Jharkhand an integral player in India’s economic growth story. The investments are expected to reshape the transportation landscape of the state, improve ease of doing business, and create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities. If executed on schedule and with transparency, the vision laid out by the Centre could very well unlock Jharkhand’s long-suppressed potential and integrate it more deeply with the national economy.
