Jammu Rail Divisions Special Trains Bring Relief to Stranded Pilgrims

Torrential rains and subsequent landslides have severely disrupted life and travel in the Jammu region, leaving thousands of passengers, many of them pilgrims, stranded. In a remarkable display of civic duty and operational efficiency, the local railway division, in close cooperation with police and local administration, has mobilised a large-scale relief effort. The initiatives, which included the operation of special trains and the provision of humanitarian aid, have been lauded for their swift and compassionate approach to an unfolding crisis. The efforts serve as a poignant reminder of the vital role public services play in ensuring the safety and well-being of the populace during natural calamities.

The Jammu region, which experienced its heaviest rainfall since 1910, saw railway tracks and bridges bear the brunt of the deluge, leading to the cancellation of 58 trains and the short-termination of many others. The disruption left a significant number of travellers, predominantly pilgrims returning from the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, stranded at stations. The situation was further compounded by a tragic landslide near the shrine, which claimed a number of lives. Recognising the urgency of the situation, the railway division, under the guidance of senior officials, launched a multi-pronged operation to address the burgeoning humanitarian challenge.

The primary objective was to facilitate the safe passage of passengers to their destinations. In a well-coordinated move, two special trains were arranged. The first, bound for Banaras, departed from Jammu, carrying over a thousand passengers. A second special service for New Delhi followed, accommodating a similar number of stranded individuals. These services were critical in alleviating the immediate pressure on the overwhelmed railway stations and providing a much-needed lifeline to those affected by the travel disruptions. The swift execution of these operations highlighted the dedication of the teams involved, who worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth and orderly departure.

In addition to running special trains, the authorities also focused on the immediate welfare of the stranded passengers. Senior officials confirmed that arrangements for food and water were made at key stations. Furthermore, with the help of local civil society organisations and NGOs, langars were organised at various locations. This collaborative effort ensured that passengers had access to sustenance and were provided with proper accommodation during the difficult weather conditions. The gestures of kindness and solidarity from the community and railway personnel were deeply appreciated by the travellers, providing them with a sense of relief and security amidst the chaos.

The events in Jammu serve as a powerful testament to the resilience of human endeavour and the importance of a well-coordinated, humanitarian response during times of crisis. While the railway network has faced significant challenges from the forces of nature, the response from the administration and the public demonstrates a shared commitment to community welfare. This approach, which prioritises the safety and needs of people, is a cornerstone of building a truly equitable and sustainable society, capable of withstanding the growing threats of climate change and natural disasters. The prompt actions not only helped stranded travellers but also reinforced public trust in the country’s essential services, showcasing a model for zero net carbon and people-centric urban and regional development.
