Jammu and Kashmir Sanctions 316 Rural Roads in Infrastructure Push
Jammu and Kashmir is set for a major boost in rural infrastructure, with the Centre approving ₹4,224 crore for the construction of 316 new roads across 19 districts under Phase 4 of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The project aims to bridge critical gaps in connectivity for remote villages, enhance mobility, and promote socio-economic development in underserved regions. The funding decision marks a significant step towards addressing long-standing rural transport deficiencies in the Union Territory.
Officials state that the approved roads span a wide geographical spread, targeting some of the most difficult terrains in the Himalayan belt. The sanctioned works are expected to improve access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities by ensuring all-weather road connectivity to hundreds of habitations. Many of these roads will also enable smoother transport of agricultural produce to markets, which has long been hindered by seasonal inaccessibility and poor road conditions. The proposal includes road upgrades, new alignments, and sustainable construction practices tailored to hilly and flood-prone landscapes. The Union Territory has consistently struggled with rural isolation, particularly during harsh winters when snowfall cuts off entire villages. Officials believe this latest investment aligns with broader national goals of equitable development and rural empowerment.
The focus on last-mile connectivity is also critical in countering outward migration from villages by making them viable places to live and work. Local leaders have welcomed the move, citing its potential to reduce travel time, support tourism in the region, and reinforce national integration through better access. The road construction will be executed with quality monitoring mechanisms and accountability protocols to ensure longevity and compliance with environmental standards. In line with zero-net-carbon goals, the use of green materials, slope stabilisation, and water conservation techniques are expected to be integrated into the design. Infrastructure experts have also called for capacity building of local contractors to ensure timely delivery and community employment. Public participation in maintenance and grievance redressal is encouraged to maintain the asset post-construction.
