Jaipur has marked a historic urban expansion, incorporating 80 revenue villages into its municipal jurisdiction for the first time in three decades. The move, approved by the Department of Autonomous Governance, extends the boundaries of both Jaipur Greater and Jaipur Heritage Municipal Corporations, significantly altering the city’s administrative and demographic landscape. This decision is expected to impact nearly 1.75 lakh residents, bringing them under an urban governance framework and facilitating enhanced civic services and infrastructure development.
The expansion integrates approximately 1.29 lakh people into Jaipur Greater Municipal Corporation and another 25,000 into Jaipur Heritage Municipal Corporation. The highest number of newly included villages, 46 in total, belong to the Sanganer subdivision, followed by 26 in Jaipur and eight in Amer. These areas, previously categorised as rural, are now set to benefit from urban planning initiatives, improved public utilities, and regulatory oversight that aligns with the broader vision of making Jaipur a more sustainable and inclusive city.
The evolution of Jaipur’s municipal structure has seen multiple administrative shifts, but its territorial limits remained unchanged since the formation of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation in 1994. Over the years, the city’s governance model underwent several transformations, including ward restructurings in 2004 and 2014. The bifurcation of the municipal body in 2019 further decentralised urban management, yet the expansion of physical jurisdiction had remained elusive until now. With this latest development, Jaipur’s municipal footprint is being realigned to reflect its growing population, urban sprawl, and infrastructure needs.
The decision to incorporate these villages stems from the necessity to accommodate the city’s rapid growth while ensuring planned development and equitable access to municipal services. Experts suggest that while the move is long overdue, its success will depend on the seamless integration of these newly added regions into the city’s civic framework. The transition will require significant investments in road networks, sanitation, waste management, and public health infrastructure. As urbanisation continues to reshape Rajasthan’s capital, the expansion of municipal boundaries signals a crucial step in Jaipur’s transformation into a modern, environmentally responsible metropolis that prioritises sustainable urban growth and improved quality of life for its residents.
