Jaipur Vande Mataram Road Redesign Targets Safer Mobility

Urban planners in Jaipur are preparing a comprehensive redesign of a major arterial corridor connecting key residential and commercial neighbourhoods in the city’s southwest. The proposed Vande Mataram Road Redesign aims to transform the six-kilometer stretch linking Mansarovar and Prithviraj Nagar into a safer, better organized mobility corridor built according to modern road design standards. The corridor, stretching from Gopalpura Bypass to Muhana Mandi, is among the widest urban roads in the city, measuring approximately 200 feet across. Despite its size, officials say the absence of pedestrian infrastructure, inconsistent lane management and encroachments in service lanes have contributed to safety concerns and traffic conflicts along the route.

Urban infrastructure authorities recently completed a detailed assessment of the corridor as part of the Vande Mataram Road Redesign initiative. The study identified multiple structural deficiencies, including the absence of footpaths, limited signage and several accident-prone junctions. Six traffic circles and two major intersections along the corridor were flagged as requiring urgent improvements. Transport planners involved in the project say the redesign will introduce a clearer lane system and upgraded road geometry aligned with guidelines developed by the Indian Roads Congress. The objective is to bring the corridor in line with modern urban road design principles already adopted in several major Indian cities. The proposed layout under the Vande Mataram Road Redesign includes a 35 to 40-foot main carriageway designed to support smoother vehicle flow, accompanied by service roads on both sides measuring approximately 20 to 25 feet in width. Dedicated pedestrian footpaths ranging from eight to ten feet are also planned to ensure safer movement for non-motorised users. Urban design experts say such changes are critical for roads that function as mixed-use corridors serving residential neighbourhoods, commercial areas and local markets.

Introducing well-defined pedestrian zones, service lanes and traffic signage helps reduce conflicts between vehicles, pedestrians and roadside activity. Beyond traffic management, the project also incorporates elements intended to improve environmental resilience and urban aesthetics. Plans include landscaped green belts along sections of the corridor and upgraded public spaces around traffic circles and junctions. A modern storm-water drainage network will also be integrated into the corridor’s design to address seasonal waterlogging. Infrastructure planners say underground utility corridors will be developed to accommodate water pipelines, sewer systems, power cables, telecommunications lines and gas networks, reducing the need for repeated road excavation. The redesign will also extend to the adjoining New Sanganer Road–Muhana Mandi stretch, which connects with the corridor and carries heavy daily traffic volumes. With roughly ten thousand vehicles estimated to use the route every day, planners believe that upgrading junction design and traffic management will significantly improve safety and travel time reliability. Urban mobility specialists note that such corridor-level interventions are increasingly important for rapidly growing cities like Jaipur. As suburban expansion and new residential clusters increase traffic pressure, modern road design must balance vehicle movement with pedestrian safety, environmental resilience and organised utility infrastructure.

If implemented as planned, the Vande Mataram Road Redesign could serve as a model for upgrading other large arterial corridors in Jaipur, reflecting a broader shift toward safer, more structured urban transport infrastructure.
