Jaipur Prepares for Showdown Flag March Against Eviction Resistance

JAIPUR: Tensions are mounting in Jaipur as the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) gears up for a significant eviction drive, targeting 615 encroachments along the stretch between Mansarovar metro station and RIICO flyover on New Sanganer Road. The move has sparked fierce opposition from local traders’ associations, who are now mobilizing against the impending action.

In response to the JDA’s enforcement plans, traders have launched protests, culminating in the closure of New Sanganer Market indefinitely. Their demands include a revision of the eviction strategy, proposing the removal of the existing Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) line instead of dismantling the encroachments. According to the traders’ association, eliminating the BRTS would widen the road to 160 feet, thereby enhancing traffic flow without disrupting their livelihoods. “The decision to shut down New Sanganer Market and escalate our protests follows our vehicle rally and meeting with Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma,” stated a member of the traders’ association, emphasizing their resistance to the eviction drive.

Meanwhile, anticipating potential unrest during the eviction operation, JDA officials, in collaboration with the police, have scheduled a flag march in the area on Tuesday. The objective is to uphold the rule of law and deter any violence or obstruction on the day of the eviction. “The enforcement of the high court’s strict order necessitates our compliance by July 11, including the clearance of encroachments on both sides of the road,” explained an official from JDA’s enforcement wing. “Following Monday’s protests, the flag march aims to reinforce discipline among shopkeepers and ensure a smooth execution of the eviction process.” The situation remains tense as both sides stand firm on their positions. With the eviction drive poised to proceed despite opposition, the forthcoming days will be critical in determining how the standoff between authorities and traders unfolds in Jaipur’s New Sanganer area.
