A monumental investment exceeding ₹1 lakh crore is currently driving the development of multiple hydropower projects across Arunachal Pradesh, poised to generate an impressive 18,000 MW of clean energy. This ambitious undertaking, spearheaded by the state government in collaboration with central public sector undertakings, marks a pivotal shift towards harnessing the region’s immense natural resources for sustainable development and bolstering India’s energy security, aligning with the vision for a zero net carbon future.
The strategic push to revitalise these projects comes after previous attempts with private developers remained stalled. Recognising the substantial capital required for such ventures, the state government opted to engage central PSUs, including the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO), Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd (SJVN), and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). This collaborative approach ensures the necessary financial muscle and technical expertise to bring these large-scale energy initiatives to fruition, transforming dormant potential into tangible progress.
Hydropower, as a renewable energy source, is fundamental to India’s commitment to combating climate change and transitioning to a cleaner energy matrix. These projects in Arunachal Pradesh will significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels, thereby lowering carbon emissions and contributing directly to national environmental targets. Among the flagship projects, the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri hydro-electric project is anticipated to commence power generation next year, poised to become India’s largest hydropower plant upon operationalisation. Following this, the proposed 2880 MW Dibang multipurpose hydroelectric project, expected to be commissioned by 2032, will feature India’s tallest dam, standing at approximately 288 metres. These mega-projects underscore the scale of the state’s commitment to harnessing its vast hydro potential, estimated at around 67,000 MW across its five major river basins and numerous smaller perennial rivulets.
Arunachal Pradesh’s strategic focus on hydropower development represents a critical step towards realising its full energy potential and contributing substantially to India’s clean energy goals.
