IRS and Cochin Shipyard Collaborate on India’s First Indigenous Autonomous Vessel, ‘SWAYAT’

India is stepping into the future of maritime technology with the launch of the indigenous autonomous vessel project ‘SWAYAT.’ In collaboration with Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL), the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has undertaken this ambitious initiative to develop and certify the country’s first unmanned vessel. The project is a fully indigenous endeavor, contributing to India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) mission.

The vessel, ‘SWAYAT,’ is being constructed at CSL’s state-owned facility and aims to demonstrate India’s capabilities in advanced maritime technologies. Key technology partners, including KPIT and other Indian manufacturers specializing in autonomous systems, are working alongside IRS to develop the necessary components and systems for the vessel.

IRS, a full member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), will ensure that the vessel meets stringent standards under its ‘Guidelines on Autonomous and Remotely Operated Vessels.’ These guidelines will include provisions for cyber security, as per IRS’ Maritime Cyber Safety recommendations. Additionally, the project will include the certification of an indigenously developed navigation and communication suite, verified by IRS. This groundbreaking collaboration is set to enhance India’s expertise in the design and certification of autonomous vessels and foster innovation in the maritime industry, paving the way for future advancements in the field.
