Ircon wins Rs 642 crore contract for Mumbai Metro Line‑6 power and traction systems

Ircon International Limited, a leading Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Railways, has secured a significant contract valued at ₹642.44 crore and €2.78 million from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for the Mumbai Metro Line-6 project. This pivotal agreement for comprehensive power and traction system development underscores a critical advancement in the city’s urban transportation infrastructure, promising enhanced connectivity and a more sustainable transit future.

The contract, awarded under Package-2, designates Ircon’s responsibilities to include the design, supply, installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of crucial power supply systems, traction systems, and electrical and mechanical (E&M) works. Furthermore, the scope extends to the provision of lifts and escalators, ensuring comprehensive functionality for the metro corridor that connects Swami Samarth Nagar to Vikhroli (Eastern Express Highway). The project is slated for completion within 104 weeks for the main infrastructure, followed by a two-year defect liability period and five years of maintenance, ensuring long-term operational reliability.

This substantial domestic work order reinforces Ircon’s established position in the urban transportation infrastructure sector, further contributing to India’s expansive metro network. The company’s proven expertise in handling large-scale, complex infrastructure projects is instrumental in strengthening last-mile connectivity and alleviating commuter traffic in Mumbai, one of the world’s most densely populated metropolitan areas. By providing an efficient mass transit solution, the metro directly contributes to reducing vehicular congestion and associated carbon emissions, aligning with the city’s aspirations for a zero net carbon footprint.

Mumbai Metro Line-6, an elevated corridor, is strategically designed to significantly enhance east-west connectivity, drastically reduce travel time, and decongest road traffic. This project forms a vital link in the city’s growing metro network and is anticipated to be a game-changer for commuters travelling between the western suburbs and eastern expressway corridors. Improved public transport infrastructure is crucial for fostering sustainable urban development, as it encourages a shift away from private vehicles, leading to cleaner air and a more eco-friendly urban environment.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the metro’s expansion holds profound implications for fostering gender-neutral and equitable cities. Enhanced accessibility and reduced travel times empower all citizens, including women and vulnerable populations, by providing safer, more reliable, and efficient commuting options. This improved mobility facilitates easier access to employment opportunities, educational institutions, and healthcare services, thereby contributing to a more inclusive urban fabric where economic and social participation is broadened for everyone. The continuous investment in such modern transit systems is essential for Mumbai’s journey towards becoming a smart, sustainable, and seamlessly connected metropolis.
