IRCON International Ltd has secured a ₹1,068.34 crore contract from Indian Railways for the construction of a new railway bridge over the River Ganga in Bihar, marking a major boost to regional rail connectivity.
The contract, awarded by East Central Railway under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, was confirmed through a Letter of Acceptance received by the state-owned engineering firm. The bridge will span the Ganga between Bikramshila and Katareah stations, forming part of a new Broad Gauge (BG) line aimed at decongesting the rail network and improving freight and passenger train movement across Bihar. Designed with a double-line track sub-structure and a single-line track superstructure, the project includes the construction of two 32.086-metre spans and thirty-three 122.0-metre Open Web Steel Girders. The execution period for the project is 1,460 days, or roughly four years.
The contract does not involve any related party transactions and is entirely domestic in scope. According to IRCON, the project is aligned with Indian Railways’ infrastructure development agenda, which prioritises faster, safer, and more efficient transport corridors nationwide. The Ganga rail bridge is expected to significantly improve mobility in eastern India by enhancing connectivity between major rail nodes and supporting the region’s economic growth through improved logistics and passenger services. IRCON, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, is a key player in large-scale infrastructure execution, with a strong record in complex railway and highway projects across India and internationally. This project adds to its growing portfolio of critical transport infrastructure developments.
With the Bihar bridge project, Indian Railways reinforces its commitment to strengthening the backbone of national connectivity, with a strategic focus on underserved regions and high-impact engineering works.
