IRCON Bags Rs 1,869‑Crore Rail And Metro Contracts Across Maharashtra, MP, Karnataka

A leading public sector engineering firm has clinched significant rail and metro contracts valued at over Rs 1,869 crore, spanning Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka. These pivotal projects will bolster India’s urban and inter-city connectivity, driving sustainable development and enhancing passenger safety. The substantial investment underscores the nation’s commitment to modernising its transportation infrastructure, paving the way for more eco-friendly and efficient transit solutions across key metropolitan and regional corridors.

The firm’s latest triumph includes a substantial Letter of Acceptance from Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for comprehensive civil and electrical works. This particular engagement focuses on the development of a new broad-gauge line between Pipaliya Nankar and Budni in Madhya Pradesh. Valued at Rs 755.78 crore, inclusive of Goods and Services Tax, this critical railway expansion will be executed through a joint venture, with the engineering giant holding a commanding 70 per cent stake. The project is slated for completion within 36 months, followed by a six-month defect liability period, ensuring robust and reliable infrastructure for regional connectivity.

On the urban transport front, the company has secured two high-value orders from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), signalling a significant push towards enhancing sustainable urban mobility in India’s financial capital. The first, designated Contract CA-239 for Metro Line-5 (Package-2), is valued at Rs 471.29 crore and an additional €2.84 million. This extensive undertaking encompasses the establishment of a 220 kV receiving substation, high- and medium-voltage cabling, a 25 kV overhead catenary system, SCADA implementation, and comprehensive electrical and mechanical works, including the installation of lifts and escalators. This project, with a 108-week execution window, also incorporates a two-year defect liability clause followed by five years of maintenance, ensuring long-term operational efficiency.

The second major urban contract, CA-233 for Metro Line-6 (Package-2), carries a value of Rs 642.44 crore and €2.79 million. Similar in scope to the Metro Line-5 project, it covers essential works related to power supply, traction systems, and station equipment. With an execution timeline of 104 weeks and extended service support, these metro projects are instrumental in reducing urban congestion, lowering carbon emissions from private vehicles, and providing equitable access to public transport for all citizens, irrespective of gender or socio-economic background.

Further underscoring its diverse capabilities, the engineering firm has also secured a Rs 253.6 crore order from South Western Railway. This contract is for the deployment of the indigenous KAVACH train collision avoidance system across 778 route kilometres within the Bengaluru and Mysuru divisions of Karnataka. This advanced safety technology is designed to prevent train collisions, significantly enhancing the security of rail travel for thousands of daily commuters. The project is set to be completed within an ambitious 18-month timeframe, reflecting a commitment to rapid modernisation of India’s railway safety infrastructure.

These multi-faceted contracts collectively highlight a strategic alignment with India’s broader vision for smart, sustainable, and inclusive urban development. By investing in modern rail and metro systems, the nation is not only addressing immediate connectivity challenges but also laying the groundwork for a future characterised by reduced environmental impact, enhanced public safety, and improved quality of life for its growing urban populations. The successful execution of these projects will undoubtedly serve as a blueprint for future infrastructure initiatives across the country, fostering resilient and equitable cities.
