The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has initiated survey work for dredging the Brahmaputra River at Bogibeel, marking the commencement of a long-awaited project that had been announced over seven years ago. The survey focuses on a critical 300-metre stretch of the river identified as a bottleneck for navigation.
This area has become increasingly challenging for ferry, cruise, and cargo services due to sedimentation and reduced water depth. The dredging is expected to enhance navigability, thereby improving the efficiency of river transport in the region. While the survey marks a positive step forward, the actual dredging work is anticipated to commence shortly after its completion.
The delay in initiating the project has raised concerns among stakeholders about the timely implementation of infrastructure developments aimed at boosting regional connectivity and economic growth.
