Sikkim is emerging as a beacon of sustainable development, with Prime Minister  lauding the state’s rapid progress and its potential to become a global green model.
In a virtual address during the ‘Sikkim @50’ event, the Prime Minister highlighted the state’s achievements and the government’s commitment to its development. Over the past decade, Sikkim has seen significant infrastructure advancements, including the construction of nearly 400 kilometers of national highways and over 100 kilometers of rural roads. The Sevoke-Rongpo railway line, a pivotal project connecting Sikkim to India’s broader rail network, is nearing completion. This 45-kilometer line, featuring 14 tunnels and 22 bridges, will enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region. The Rangpo railway station, inspired by Sikkim’s rich culture and heritage, will serve as a vital node in this network .
Sikkim’s commitment to environmental sustainability is evident in its status as India’s first fully organic state. The state has also pioneered organic fish farming, setting a precedent for eco-friendly agricultural practices. Looking ahead, the Prime Minister envisions Sikkim as a global model for balancing development with environmental conservation. In addition to infrastructure and environmental initiatives, Sikkim is focusing on enhancing its healthcare and tourism sectors. The foundation stone for a new 500-bed hospital in Namchi district has been laid, aiming to provide world-class medical facilities to the region. Furthermore, the development of a passenger ropeway at Sangachoeling is expected to boost tourism and improve accessibility for both locals and visitors.
The Prime Minister’s address underscores the government’s ‘Act East’ policy, emphasizing the importance of the Northeast region in India’s development agenda. By prioritizing infrastructure, sustainability, and regional connectivity, Sikkim is poised to play a pivotal role in the nation’s growth trajectory. As Sikkim celebrates its 50th Statehood Day, the state’s journey reflects a harmonious blend of tradition, sustainability, and progress. With continued support and strategic initiatives, Sikkim is set to become a model for other regions striving for balanced and inclusive development.
