Construction of the elevated highway corridor at Porvorim is progressing at an impressive pace, with 88 columns now completed, setting the stage for the next significant phase of the project.
The ambitious six-lane project, stretching over 5.2 kilometres, is expected to meet its target completion date of December 2025, four months ahead of the initial government schedule. With road resurfacing already underway, the project is poised to transform the traffic landscape of the region and significantly reduce congestion. As the contractors, Rajasthan-based RRSM Infra, continue to make steady progress, the focus now shifts to the superstructure, with nine spans already lifted on the Hotel Majestic side. By the end of May, all columns will be crowned with pier caps, paving the way for the remaining spans to be elevated. These spans, each weighing 120 tonnes, are being installed using a state-of-the-art launcher with a capacity of 2,040 tonnes. A total of 17 segments are to be fitted between each pair of piers, each placed 50 metres apart, creating the solid foundation for the elevated road.
The entire corridor is being constructed at a cost of Rs 364 crore, with a clear vision of creating a sustainable, eco-friendly solution for the region’s growing traffic woes. The design includes junctions at both ends of the elevated highway – one near the Atal Setu landing and the other at the Guirim overpass. These junctions will provide seamless access to surrounding roads, enhancing the overall efficiency of the traffic system. Furthermore, the project will incorporate dedicated service roads and pedestrian access points, ensuring the needs of all commuters, including those on foot, are met.One of the key factors driving the success of the project is the use of advanced construction methods and heavy-duty machinery. The use of a special launcher to fit the massive segments is a testament to the technical expertise involved in this high-profile infrastructure project.
