Indore’s Air Quality Sees Notable Improvement in FY 2025

Indore recorded a significant improvement in air quality during the financial year 2024–25, with a 14 per cent reduction in PM10 levels compared to the previous year, according to data released by the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board. The city’s annual average PM10 concentration dropped from 99 to 85 micrograms per cubic metre, indicating progress in curbing dust and particulate pollution.

The data further highlights a promising trend for June 2025. Between June 1 and June 16, the average PM10 level was recorded at 50 micrograms per cubic metre—lower than the 56.09 micrograms recorded during the same period last year. Officials attribute the improvement to better implementation of air quality management practices and increased public awareness.

According to regional pollution control board officials, sustained monitoring and control measures contributed to this improvement. “We’ve seen a consistent push for better air quality, including regulations on construction activities, vehicle emissions checks, and public participation in maintaining a cleaner environment,” said the board’s regional officer.

Experts, however, caution that while PM10 levels have improved, the rising levels of PM2.5—ultrafine particles that penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream—pose a serious public health concern. Environmental specialists note that PM2.5 is largely generated from fossil fuel combustion, including emissions from vehicles, industrial activity, and waste burning.

Indore’s vehicular traffic remains a major contributor to air pollution. Regional Transport Office data reveals that the city is home to over 20 lakh registered vehicles, including two-wheelers, cars, and auto-rickshaws. On average, 8,000 two-wheelers and up to 3,000 cars are added to the roads each day, intensifying the pressure on the city’s environment.

Specialists have called for stronger anti-pollution enforcement, including vehicle emission audits, improved public transport infrastructure, and stricter industrial monitoring to ensure sustained improvement. Citizen engagement and policy continuity are considered key to achieving long-term air quality goals.
