Indore Municipal Corporation Plans Floating Wetlands To Rejuvenate City Rivers Sustainably

Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has announced a pioneering initiative to rejuvenate the city’s rivers through the deployment of modern technology, including floating wetlands and aerators. Officials emphasise that this initiative aligns with broader environmental objectives under the Namami Gange Mission and AMRUT 2.0 projects while preparing the city for the upcoming Simhastha 2028 festival.

The municipal corporation plans to organise a hackathon in collaboration with leading companies and academic institutions to explore sustainable and scalable water conservation solutions. Experts note that floating wetlands not only enhance water quality but also improve biodiversity and support long-term urban ecological balance. Officials have highlighted that this project will integrate water treatment, pollution control, and sanitation management to achieve measurable environmental benefits. During a recent review meeting, municipal authorities stressed the importance of removing illegal encroachments along riverbanks and drains to enable uninterrupted cleaning and development works. Officials also directed that all groundwork, including infrastructure and drainage improvements, should be completed prior to surface-level projects to avoid unnecessary disruptions and additional costs for both the municipal corporation and residents.

The IMC emphasises accountability and timelines, instructing officials to ensure that ongoing outfall tapping works and sanitation measures adhere to the highest standards. Experts involved in the project note that combining technological innovation with strong governance mechanisms will be essential to achieving both short-term results and long-term sustainability. Urban ecologists and civic planners have lauded Indore’s approach as a model for integrating eco-friendly urban development with citizen-centric governance. Floating wetlands, combined with controlled water management systems, are expected to improve oxygenation, reduce pollutants, and restore natural aquatic habitats, supporting both environmental and public health objectives.

Officials assert that the initiative is designed not only to enhance river ecology but also to position Indore as a clean, sustainable, and environmentally responsible city ahead of Simhastha 2028. By implementing these measures, the city aims to ensure long-term benefits for residents while reinforcing its commitment to zero net carbon and equitable urban development principles. With a focus on innovation, accountability, and ecological restoration, Indore is setting a precedent for Indian cities seeking sustainable solutions to urban water challenges. Authorities emphasise that citizen participation, technological collaboration, and strict adherence to project timelines will be crucial in achieving the city’s environmental and social objectives.
