Indore Metro has officially commenced commercial operations, marking a pivotal moment in the city’s journey towards sustainable urban mobility. The maiden commercial run on Sunday, despite an initially modest passenger turnout, witnessed a steady increase in ridership by midday, reflecting strong public enthusiasm. This transformative step is poised to significantly enhance public transportation, reducing the city’s carbon footprint and fostering more equitable access to urban opportunities, aligning with the vision of a zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and gender-neutral urban environment.
The launch of commercial services follows the inauguration of the first phase of the Indore Metro project by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 31, 2025, via video link from Bhopal. This ceremonial launch coincided with the 300th birth anniversary celebrations of Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar, a revered ruler of Malwa, and was integrated with a “Women Empowerment Mega Conference.” During his address, PM Modi underscored Indore’s global acclaim for cleanliness and expressed confidence that the city would now also be recognised for its burgeoning metro connectivity, further solidifying its image as a modern, progressive urban centre.
While the initial operational plan for the metro outlined 50 trips per day, the overwhelming public response to free travel during the launch phase saw daily trips exceeding 100. As of Monday, the service will revert to its original schedule of 50 trips per day. The fare structure has been set at concessional rates, with a minimum of ₹5 for short distances and ₹8 for a seven-kilometre journey. Promotional discounts are set to be in effect for the first three months, gradually transitioning to standard rates thereafter. This phased approach aims to encourage initial adoption while ensuring long-term financial sustainability.
Currently, the Indore Metro’s operational segment spans a seven-kilometre stretch, primarily serving commercial zones. However, this is merely the foundational phase of a much larger network. Authorities are now intensely focused on an upcoming 17-kilometre trial run, which will extend metro services from Gandhi Nagar to Radisson Hotel Square. This expansion is strategically vital, as it is expected to significantly boost regular ridership, particularly among the vast workforce and student population from major institutions like TCS and Infosys, whose campuses are conveniently located along the extended route. This expansion will also enable a broader section of the population to access public transport, fostering inclusivity.
A key operational challenge in the initial phase is the absence of an automated ticketing system. Currently, ticket sales and passenger data are being compiled manually. Metro officials have acknowledged this interim measure and are actively working towards implementing a streamlined digital system. The eventual deployment of an automated system will not only enhance efficiency and convenience for commuters but also provide valuable data for optimising services and planning future expansions, contributing to a truly smart and sustainable city infrastructure.
Once fully operational, the broader metro network is projected to encompass 31.32 kilometres with 28 stations, fundamentally reshaping Indore’s public transportation landscape. This comprehensive network will offer residents a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly transit system, significantly reducing reliance on private vehicles. The expansion will contribute directly to lower carbon emissions, cleaner air, and reduced traffic congestion, all vital components of Indore’s aspiration to become a zero-net carbon and eco-friendly urban model. The metro’s design and accessibility are also envisioned to cater to all segments of society, promoting gender-neutral urban mobility and enhancing overall urban livability.
