Indore begins underground Metro construction near airport to boost connectivity

Indore has commenced construction on its inaugural underground Metro track, with initial work concentrated in the critical airport vicinity. This pivotal development prioritises seamless connectivity between Gandhi Nagar Station and Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, marking a significant leap in enhancing the city’s public transport infrastructure. The strategic expansion is poised to revolutionise urban mobility, offering residents and travellers a more efficient and sustainable commuting experience.

The Metro administration has underscored the strategic importance of linking Gandhi Nagar Station directly to Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport, deeming it a cornerstone for expanding the city’s comprehensive Metro network. This critical segment is anticipated to significantly enhance accessibility for air travellers, positioning Indore as a forward-thinking urban centre with integrated transport solutions. Initial Metro services from Gandhi Nagar to Radisson are projected to commence by January 2026, setting an ambitious timeline for this transformative project.

In preparation for this ambitious undertaking, extensive excavation work has already begun near the airport, following a comprehensive drone survey and securing all necessary administrative approvals. The design includes Indore’s first underground Metro station situated directly within the airport premises, a feature designed to provide unparalleled convenience for passengers. This direct access is expected to substantially reduce travel time and reliance on private vehicles, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint for the city.

Beyond the underground segment, the Metro Corporation has significantly accelerated progress on the 11-kilometre elevated corridor stretching from Super Corridor Station No. 3 to Robot Square. While this elevated section between Gandhi Nagar and Robot Square is slated for completion within the next six months, the full operational potential and passenger capacity of the entire network will only be realised once the crucial link to the airport is fully established, cementing its status as a top priority.

The project’s execution involves the deployment of large-scale excavation machinery, with digging operations actively underway. The planned Metro station will extend from the airport towards Bijasan Tekri, forming an innovative integrated underground-elevated Metro system, a first for Indore. This design ensures a gradual transition from the subterranean section near the airport to an elevated track along Airport Road, with pillars of varying heights already in place, mirroring the efficient design principles observed in major metropolitan networks.

Furthermore, the integration of escalators connecting the airport terminal directly with the Metro station is a thoughtful design element aimed at minimising walking distances, particularly for travellers managing luggage. This focus on passenger convenience and seamless transitions underscores a commitment to creating a truly equitable and user-friendly public transport system. Such infrastructure investments are vital for fostering sustainable urban growth, promoting gender-neutral access to opportunities, and ultimately building a more eco-friendly and inclusive city for all its inhabitants.
