IndiGo Airlines has officially launched its much-anticipated IndiGo Stretch service, setting a new benchmark for mid-tier air travel. On Thursday, the inaugural flight from Delhi to Mumbai took off, marking the airline’s first foray into the business-class market. Covering a flight duration of just 1 hour and 40 minutes, the plane touched down at Mumbai Airport at 8:48 AM local time.
This new service is designed to bridge the gap between budget-friendly flying options and the premium offerings of full-service carriers. IndiGo, known for its low-cost operations, has strategically positioned the IndiGo Stretch as an affordable business-class alternative, aimed at attracting travellers who desire enhanced comfort but at a more accessible price point. The benefits of this new service include recliner-style lie-flat seats, in-flight entertainment (IFE) screens, hot meals, and exclusive lounge access – features typically associated with high-end business-class offerings. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to diversify IndiGo’s service portfolio, catering to a growing middle-class audience that seeks both affordability and quality.
CEO Pieter Elbers was on board the inaugural flight, which was accompanied by a crowd of aviation enthusiasts and media. This launch is also significant as IndiGo’s Stretch service will soon be available on its upcoming fleet of Airbus A321XLRs and A350-900s, which were introduced in partnership with Iberia on Thursday. Passenger excitement was palpable, with many sharing their anticipation on social media. One traveller expressed, “Excited to experience the new IndiGo Stretch service – comfort and quality at a reasonable price.” From a sustainability standpoint, IndiGo’s Stretch service reflects the airline’s continued commitment to eco-conscious aviation practices. By deploying newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft, the airline is taking significant steps towards reducing its carbon footprint, ensuring that the increased demand for business-class travel does not come at the cost of environmental sustainability. As the Indian aviation market continues to expand, IndiGo’s new offering is expected to resonate with both business and leisure travellers, striking a delicate balance between luxury and economy.
