The Aurangabad Tourism Development Foundation (ATDF) has formally urged IndiGo Airlines to introduce twice-daily ATR flight services between Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) and Pune.
This proposal comes in response to the escalating demand for efficient air travel options between these two key cities in Maharashtra. Sunit Kothari, Chairman of the ATDF Civil Aviation Committee, highlighted the critical need for improved air connectivity, emphasizing that both Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Pune are pivotal centres for industry, commerce, and education. The absence of direct flights currently necessitates a lengthy 5–6-hour road journey, which is increasingly becoming untenable for daily commuters, students, professionals, and entrepreneurs.
The ATDF’s representation underscores that the Indian Air Force has recently allocated additional arrival and departure slots at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Airport, thereby creating a conducive environment for the proposed air services. The foundation advocates for the deployment of small passenger aircraft, such as ATRs, for morning and evening flights, which would significantly reduce travel time, alleviate road congestion, and foster economic and social development between the two cities. IndiGo Airlines, known for its extensive network and commitment to enhancing regional connectivity, has previously expanded its operations in Maharashtra. In July 2024, the airline launched new routes connecting Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with North Goa and Nagpur, operating three times a week. These initiatives have been instrumental in boosting regional tourism and facilitating business travel.
The proposed twice-daily flights between Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Pune align with the broader objective of improving air connectivity in Maharashtra. With Pune Airport handling over 10 million passengers annually and serving as a hub for both domestic and international flights, the introduction of additional services is anticipated to meet the growing demand and support the state’s economic aspirations. The ATDF’s initiative reflects a collaborative effort between governmental bodies, the aviation sector, and local communities to address the pressing need for enhanced transportation infrastructure. If implemented, the proposed flights would not only streamline travel between Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Pune but also contribute to the overall development of the region, promoting sustainability and equitable access to resources.
As discussions progress, stakeholders remain optimistic that the introduction of these air services will serve as a catalyst for further infrastructural advancements, aligning with the vision of creating zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, and sustainable urban environments in Maharashtra.
