IndiGo Expands International Network with Boeing 787-9 Aircraft Lease Agreement
New Delhi, February 6, 2025 – In a significant step to expand its international reach, IndiGo has entered into a damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways for one Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This lease, set to begin in March 2025, will be the first time that the domestic carrier incorporates the wide-body Boeing 787 into its fleet.
The new aircraft, which will be delivered to India in the coming weeks, is expected to play a pivotal role in IndiGo’s strategy to extend its international network, particularly to European destinations. The airline’s management has emphasised its commitment to expanding its international operations, aiming to solidify its position as a key global player by 2030. Pieter Elbers, the Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, expressed excitement over the partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways, a leading transatlantic airline, stating, “As part of our broader strategy to significantly expand our international network, we are pleased to confirm this damp lease of one Boeing 787-9 aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways. Our vision is to transform into a global player by 2030, with strong roots and continuous expansion in India.”
The agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways is part of IndiGo’s broader goal of becoming a major force in international aviation. Currently, IndiGo operates a fleet of 352 aircraft, with just two B777 wide-body planes. These two B777s are wet-leased from Turkish Airlines, used primarily for flights between India and Istanbul. However, the new 787-9 will mark a new era for IndiGo, as it continues to expand its international reach. The lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways is a damp lease, meaning that the aircraft will be leased along with maintenance services, but without the crew and insurance, which will be provided by IndiGo. This type of lease allows IndiGo to benefit from Norse Atlantic’s operational support while maintaining control over its own staffing arrangements and insurance. The agreement is initially for six months, but can be extended for up to 18 months, depending on regulatory approvals and operational needs. The flexibility in the lease term allows IndiGo to assess the aircraft’s performance and determine if further expansion is required.
Both IndiGo and Norse Atlantic are reportedly keen to explore additional opportunities for collaboration, including the possibility of contracting additional aircraft in the future. This collaboration could further strengthen IndiGo’s growing presence in the global aviation market. IndiGo’s decision to lease a Boeing 787-9 aircraft is part of the airline’s broader strategy to increase its capacity for long-haul international flights. The airline has already placed an order for 30 Airbus A350-900 wide-body aircraft, with the option to purchase an additional 70. The first of these A350s are expected to be delivered in 2027, marking another significant leap in IndiGo’s fleet expansion plans. IndiGo has also indicated that it will use these aircraft to cater to the growing demand for international travel to and from India. As one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally, India has seen an uptick in air travel, particularly for long-haul destinations such as Europe and North America.
This new aircraft, alongside IndiGo’s future A350s, will help the airline meet the rising demand for direct flights to key international cities. The Boeing 787-9 is known for its fuel efficiency and capability on long-haul routes, making it an ideal choice for IndiGo’s growing fleet.
