IndiGo Cancels Flights to Six Cities Amid Security Concerns

IndiGo Airlines has announced the cancellation of all flights to and from six major Indian cities—Jammu, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Leh, Srinagar, and Rajkot—for May 13, 2025.

The airline cited “the latest developments” and prioritised passenger safety in its decision. The affected cities are among those that were reopened for civilian flights on Monday after being temporarily shut due to heightened security concerns. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), IndiGo said, “In light of the latest developments and with your safety as our utmost priority, flights to and from Jammu, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Leh, Srinagar, and Rajkot are cancelled for 13th May 2025.” The airline further advised passengers to check their flight status on its website or mobile app before heading to the airport.

The cancellations come amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, which have led to increased security measures and airspace restrictions. On May 8, Pakistan launched a drone attack near Jammu following Indian missile strikes the previous day, which were in retaliation for an earlier attack that killed Indian tourists. The conflict, described as the worst in two decades, has resulted in civilian casualties and a volatile security situation, particularly near the India-Pakistan border and in Kashmir. In response to the heightened security situation, precautionary blackouts were implemented in Punjab’s border districts, including Amritsar and Hoshiarpur, following drone sightings in areas such as Samba (Jammu) and Jalandhar. The Amritsar administration initiated the blackout after air raid sirens were sounded, and Hoshiarpur ordered blackouts in specific towns while advising voluntary participation district-wide. A surveillance drone was reportedly shot down in Jalandhar around 9:20 PM, with no further activity reported post 10 PM.

These developments have led to disruptions in air travel, with several airlines, including Air India, also announcing flight cancellations to and from the affected cities. Air India cancelled round-trip flights to and from eight cities: Jammu, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot. The airline cited safety concerns and stated that it was monitoring the situation closely. The airport closures and flight cancellations have significantly impacted passengers, especially those with urgent travel needs. Many travelers have been left stranded or forced to make last-minute alternative arrangements. The airlines have advised affected passengers to stay updated through their official channels and to check the status of their flights before making any travel plans.

The situation remains fluid, with ongoing monitoring by aviation authorities and airlines. Passengers are urged to exercise caution and stay informed about the latest developments. The airlines have assured that they are working to resume normal operations as soon as the security situation permits.
