IndiGo ATR Flights Shift to Terminal 4 at Chennai Airport from June 1

Starting June 1, 2025, all IndiGo ATR aircraft departures, bearing flight numbers in the 7000 to 7999 range, will relocate their operations to Domestic Terminal 4 (T4) at Chennai International Airport.

However, arrivals for ATR flights and all other services will continue to be handled at Terminal 1 (T1). This strategic change aims to ease congestion at the airport during the ongoing capacity enhancement works in key operational areas. Officials from Chennai Airport explained that shifting ATR departures to T4 is a temporary but necessary measure to ensure smoother operations during the critical phase of infrastructure upgrades. The move reflects the airport’s commitment to maintaining efficiency and passenger convenience while accommodating future growth.

Alongside this operational shift, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has launched a mobile application called ‘Atithi@Indian Customs.’ This innovative digital platform streamlines customs declarations for international travellers by enabling passengers to submit baggage, item, and currency declarations before arrival at Indian airports. Available on both iOS and Android, the app supports a paperless process aimed at reducing processing time and enhancing traveller experience. Experts in customs administration point out that ‘Atithi’ represents a significant step toward digital governance, promoting transparency and operational efficiency. By allowing pre-clearance, passengers benefit from expedited customs processing, often bypassing long queues and delays. The app’s design permits users to register with basic passport details and manage declarations seamlessly, facilitating faster clearance and a more sustainable approach by reducing paper usage.

In a complementary development, Indian airports are actively promoting the adoption of ‘Digi Yatra,’ a government initiative leveraging facial recognition technology to facilitate paperless and contactless entry and security clearance at airports. This decentralised digital travel credentials platform, developed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Digi Yatra Foundation, enables passengers to store identification and travel documents securely on their mobile devices. Officials involved in airport operations emphasise that Digi Yatra helps reduce wait times at terminals and makes the boarding process more efficient. The seamless integration of biometric technology not only enhances passenger convenience but also supports sustainable airport operations by minimizing the need for physical documents and reducing touchpoints—a priority in post-pandemic air travel management.

Together, these initiatives highlight Chennai International Airport’s focus on blending infrastructure development with cutting-edge digital solutions to create a more sustainable, user-friendly, and efficient air travel environment. By managing airport space smartly during construction phases and embracing innovative technology, the airport is aligning with broader goals of eco-friendly, equitable urban mobility and enhanced passenger experiences. While the terminal shift might cause some initial adjustment for regular flyers, the airport authorities assure that clear signage, communication, and support services will ensure a smooth transition.
