IndiGo Advises Passengers To Leave Early Amid Heavy Waterlogging On Mumbai Roads

IndiGo Airlines has issued a travel advisory for passengers flying out of Mumbai after continuous overnight rainfall led to severe waterlogging across key roads in the city. The heavy downpour has caused significant traffic congestion, delays in public transport, and long travel times to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, prompting the airline to urge travellers to leave well in advance for their flights.

According to civic authorities, several areas in Mumbai, including Andheri, Kurla, Dadar, Sion, and Chembur, witnessed heavy waterlogging due to more than 150 mm of rainfall in less than 24 hours. The Andheri subway and parts of the Eastern and Western Express Highways were either partially shut or heavily congested, leading to traffic snarls during peak morning hours. Suburban train services also faced disruptions, with local trains running behind schedule on both Central and Western Railway lines. In its advisory, IndiGo stated that passengers are likely to experience delays in reaching the airport and should factor in additional travel time. “Due to heavy rains and waterlogging on multiple routes across Mumbai, road travel to the airport is taking longer than usual. Flyers are requested to plan their journey accordingly and reach early to avoid last-minute inconvenience,” the airline said in its statement.

Airport officials also reported an increase in the number of passengers arriving late for check-in, leading to additional queues and stress at the departure terminals. Despite challenging weather conditions, flights at Mumbai Airport continued to operate with only minor delays, though authorities confirmed that further disruptions could not be ruled out if rainfall intensity increases. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed teams to clear waterlogged stretches and unblock stormwater drains. Pumps were pressed into service at vulnerable spots such as Hindmata in Dadar, Milan subway, and King’s Circle. Officials noted that while high tides coupled with heavy rainfall worsened flooding in low-lying areas, efforts are underway to restore normalcy.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas with deep waterlogging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and surrounding districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. Local authorities in Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Palghar have also kept schools and colleges shut as a precautionary measure. For air passengers, the combination of rain, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions has created significant uncertainty. Travel experts recommend using real-time traffic apps, booking reliable cabs in advance, and allowing at least two to three hours of buffer time for reaching the airport.

IndiGo’s advisory serves as a reminder of how monsoon rains continue to challenge Mumbai’s urban infrastructure and disrupt the city’s daily rhythm. With more showers forecast, both authorities and airlines are urging residents to remain alert and plan travel cautiously.
