India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) reported that India’s solar power capacity reached 64,380.68 mw in February 2023, indicating significant progress in the adoption of renewable energy sources. India’s wind power capacity also surpassed the 42,015.38 mw mark. The report highlights that India’s total installed renewable energy capacity has now exceeded 122 gw, with solar power accounting for the largest share, followed by wind power and bio-power. Rajasthan leads the country in total renewable energy capacity, followed by Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
India has set an ambitious target of achieving 175 gw of renewable energy capacity by 2022, with 100 gw contributed by solar power. While challenges in meeting these targets exist, the MNRE report suggests that India is making significant progress and is on track to achieve its renewable energy goals.
The Indian government has introduced various initiatives to promote the adoption of renewable energy sources, including policies encouraging solar parks’ development and net metering for rooftop solar installations. Additionally, the government has launched schemes to support the installation of solar panels in public buildings, agricultural fields and other areas.
India’s progress in renewable energy adoption is vital for the country’s sustainable development and efforts to combat climate change. The MNRE report emphasises that India is moving in the right direction to achieve its renewable energy targets. The shift to renewable energy sources is even more crucial as India’s growing population and energy demands increase.
