India’s Solar Capacity Surges by 1.7 GW

India added 1,733.7 MW of solar power capacity in July, pushing the total installed capacity to 87.2 GW by month-end, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This addition contributes significantly to the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance its renewable energy infrastructure.

For the fiscal year 2025, up until July, India has installed a total of 5,394 MW of new solar capacity. The ambitious target for renewable energy capacity additions in FY25 stands between 30 to 35 GW, marking a potential record if met. This surge in capacity is driven by a combination of increased auction activities and improved availability of essential components such as solar modules, cells, and wind turbines.

The pace of capacity expansion is also expected to accelerate, with nodal agencies poised to auction 50 GW of renewable energy capacity this fiscal year. This figure aligns with the planned trajectory set for each year beginning from FY24. Last fiscal year, agencies successfully auctioned approximately 51 GW of renewable energy capacity, underscoring a robust commitment to scaling up green energy projects. According to Moody’s Ratings, India’s goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 necessitates an annual addition of roughly 44 GW. Meeting this target will require substantial investment, estimated between $190 to $215 billion over the next seven years. Investments in renewable energy and electricity transmission are anticipated to remain a key focus for the power sector in the coming years.

As of July’s end, the installed solar capacity comprises 67.5 GW from ground-mounted projects and 13.4 GW from rooftop installations. Wind energy capacity also saw an increase of 419.06 MW in July, bringing the cumulative wind energy capacity to 47.07 GW. The ongoing expansion in both solar and wind power reflects India’s strategic push towards diversifying its energy mix and reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development goals. The government’s proactive measures and investment in renewable energy infrastructure are crucial for meeting the country’s long-term energy targets and ensuring a cleaner, more sustainable future.
