India’s Road Revolution Rs 50,655 Crore Approved for High-Speed Corridors

The Cabinet approved a significant investment of Rs 50,655 crore for eight high-speed road corridors spanning a total of 936 km. This substantial infrastructure push is poised to revolutionise logistics, mitigate congestion, and bolster national connectivity.

The planned corridors are a critical component of India’s strategy to evolve into a $30 trillion economy by 2047. A detailed scientific transport study, leveraging GSTN and toll data, identified a comprehensive network of 50,000 km of high-speed highway corridors essential for supporting this ambitious economic goal. An 88-km six-lane project valued at Rs 4,613 crore. Developed under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, this access-controlled corridor will shorten the distance between Agra and Gwalior by 7% and cut travel time by 50%, thereby significantly lowering logistics costs. Khragpur-Moregram Corridor: Spanning 231 km and costing Rs 10,247 crore, this four-lane corridor will be built using Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). It aims to enhance connectivity between key states, including West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and the North-Eastern regions. A 214 km six-lane stretch, costing Rs 10,534 crore, will be developed in BOT mode. This corridor will connect two major national corridors in Gujarat, facilitating smoother freight movement between industrial zones and major ports.

This 68 km four-lane ring road, with an investment of Rs 3,935 crore, will be developed under HAM. It aims to alleviate congestion on national highways passing through Ayodhya and expedite pilgrim travel. The 137-km four-lane section between Pathalgaon and Gumla will be developed with Rs 4,473 crore under HAM. It will improve connectivity between key mining areas and industrial hubs. A 47 km six-lane ring road costing Rs 3,298 crore will be constructed using Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode. It is designed to segregate long-distance traffic and enhance logistics efficiency.

This 121 km project involves widening and improving existing bypasses with an investment of Rs 5,729 crore, developed under BOT mode. An 8-lane, 30 km elevated corridor near Pune will be built at a cost of Rs 7,827 crore under BOT mode. The implementation of these projects is anticipated to create approximately 44.2 million person-days of direct and indirect employment. This large-scale investment in high-speed road infrastructure underscores the government’s commitment to improving national logistics and connectivity, setting a robust foundation for India’s future economic growth.
