India’s Mines Ministry Hosts Summit on Critical Minerals

The Ministry of Mines, in collaboration with the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation (Shakti), Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW), and Indian Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD), is set to convene the ‘Critical Minerals Summit:

Enhancing Beneficiation and Processing Capabilities on April 29-30 at the India Habitat Centre in Lodhi Estate, New Delhi. This summit marks a significant initiative aimed at fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation in the critical mineral beneficiation and processing sector. Against the backdrop of India’s rapid economic growth and ambitious clean energy targets, securing a domestic supply of Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) has become paramount, especially for technologies vital to renewable energy systems and electric vehicles, as highlighted in a recent ministry press release. Bringing together a diverse cohort of Indian and international stakeholders, including industry leaders, startups, government officials, scientists, academics, and policy experts, the summit will serve as a platform for active dialogue and interactive workshops. Key areas of focus will include progress on mineral auctions, policy incentives for CRM ecosystem development, and the advancement of commercially viable and environmentally sustainable solutions.

The summit’s agenda features technical sessions covering eight key minerals: Glauconite (Potash), Lithium – Rare Earth Elements (Laterite), Chromium, Platinum Group, Graphite, Tungsten associated with Graphite, Rare Earths (RE), and Vanadium associated with Graphite. These sessions are designed to facilitate business-to-business collaboration and knowledge exchange, offering valuable insights into critical mineral supply chain dynamics. Overall, the summit aims to equip government and industry stakeholders with the necessary knowledge, connections, and tools to accelerate domestic CRM production, thereby supporting India’s economic growth and sustainability objectives. It represents a strategic step towards enhancing resource security and driving innovation in the critical minerals sector.
