India’s Maritime Reach Targeting Mongla Port for Expansion

With aimed at bolstering its maritime influence and countering China’s growing presence in the region, India is actively pursuing the operation of the Mongla Port in Bangladesh. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to discuss the matter with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Sheikh Hasina, during her upcoming visit to India, this initiative underscores India’s efforts to expand its port management capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The potential operation of the Mongla Port would mark a significant milestone in India’s regional maritime strategy, following its existing operations at the Chabahar Port in Iran and the Sittwe Port in Myanmar. By securing operational rights at strategic ports across the IOR, India aims to position itself as a key security provider in the region.

The move comes amidst growing concerns over China’s extensive infrastructure projects in neighbouring countries, raising apprehensions about Beijing’s expanding influence. India’s proactive engagement in port operations is seen as a crucial step in safeguarding its strategic interests and maintaining regional stability.

India’s ongoing dialogue with Bangladesh regarding the Mongla Port operation is expected to feature prominently during Prime Minister Hasina’s visit to India. While China has been keen on expanding its influence in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Hasina’s reluctance to include Beijing in her itinerary underscores Bangladesh’s strategic alignment with India.

India’s engagement in port operations is not only driven by geopolitical considerations but also by economic imperatives. With transshipment access to ports in Bangladesh, India seeks to enhance connectivity and facilitate trade, particularly for its northeastern states. The potential operation of the Mongla Port would further strengthen India’s maritime connectivity network in the region.

The delegation from India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) recently visited the Mongla Port to assess operational feasibility, signaling India’s intent to pursue this strategic opportunity. As negotiations progress, India is poised to submit a comprehensive proposal to the Mongla Port Authority, outlining the potential benefits of port operation and management.

With plans for the construction of additional jetties to accommodate increased cargo volume, the Mongla Port holds significant promise for enhancing regional trade and connectivity. India’s strategic engagement in port operations reflects its commitment to fostering mutually beneficial partnerships and promoting stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
