Indias Longest Rail Girder Launched in Kalamboli

The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) has successfully launched its longest rail flyover girder to date.

Measuring an impressive 110.5 metres and weighing approximately 1,500 tonnes, this open web steel girder was installed over existing railway tracks at Kalamboli in Raigad district, Maharashtra, marking a monumental engineering achievement in the JNPT-Nilje section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). The installation, completed on the night of May 12, 2025, involved the complex radial shifting of the massive girder by 34 metres over active Indian Railways tracks. This intricate operation required meticulous planning and the deployment of advanced construction technologies to ensure safety and precision. The successful execution of this task underscores DFCCIL’s commitment to enhancing the nation’s logistics backbone through world-class freight infrastructure.

The Kalamboli rail flyover stands as a testament to India’s growing capabilities in large-scale infrastructure projects. By facilitating seamless freight movement, it is poised to significantly improve the efficiency of cargo transportation between the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the hinterlands, thereby reducing transit times and operational costs. The launch of this girder is not just an engineering feat but also a strategic move towards sustainable urban development. By diverting freight traffic away from congested passenger lines, the flyover will alleviate pressure on existing rail networks, leading to reduced delays and enhanced safety. Moreover, the improved efficiency in freight movement is expected to contribute to lower carbon emissions, aligning with India’s goals for eco-friendly and sustainable urban growth.

The project also exemplifies gender-neutral and equitable development practices. By creating employment opportunities during its construction phase and improving logistics infrastructure, it supports inclusive economic growth. The enhanced connectivity is anticipated to benefit various sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, and retail, by providing more reliable and faster transportation options. The successful completion of the Kalamboli rail flyover girder installation marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards modernizing its freight corridors. It reflects the nation’s dedication to building resilient infrastructure that supports economic development while adhering to principles of sustainability and inclusivity.

As DFCCIL continues to advance its projects across the country, the Kalamboli achievement serves as an inspiring example of what can be accomplished through innovation, meticulous planning, and a commitment to excellence in infrastructure development.
