India currently stands at 38th position in the Logistics Performance Index, as disclosed by officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways at the AMET Global Maritime Summit 2024 and AMET Global Maritime Awards, organised by AMET University.During the summit, the Director General of Shipping elaborated on various initiatives and measures being implemented to boost the shipping industry. “We need to improve this ranking substantially. We are adopting advanced technologies, exploring new business plans, fast-tracking infrastructure development, focusing on sustainable logistics, and becoming a preferred investment destination,” the official stated.
Significant strides have been made in enhancing the capacity and efficiency of India’s maritime infrastructure. Major port capacity has increased by 102%, inland waterways cargo has surged by over 1,000%, and the strength of seafarers has risen by 121%. Notably, in the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2023, nine Indian ports have been ranked among the global top 100, reflecting the country’s progress in this sector.The Director General also emphasised the need to cultivate the right ecosystem to leverage the ship-repair and ship-building industry. “Shipping management companies need to strive for gender parity. As more lady cadets sign on to vessels, we will see an increase in the number of women seafarers,” he remarked.Srinivas Gopal, Principal of DGS Courses at AMET University, highlighted the significance of the Global Maritime Awards in recognising individuals and institutions whose contributions have had a significant impact on maritime education. The awards aim to acknowledge the time and effort invested in advancing the maritime sector.
