Hubballi Airport in Karnataka has been conferred the Platinum Recognition in the Green Airports Recognition 2025 programme by Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific and Middle East.
This accolade, awarded in the category of “Sustainable Energy at Airports” for facilities handling fewer than six million passengers annually, positions Hubballi as a standout example of innovative green infrastructure and climate leadership in regional aviation. The announcement was made during ACI’s regional assembly held recently in New Delhi, drawing attention to the broader sustainability roadmap being pursued across India’s civil aviation network. At the core of this achievement lies the commissioning of an 8-megawatt solar power plant in December 2022, an initiative spearheaded by the Airports Authority of India. Uniquely, this solar facility is the first in the country to transmit renewable energy across multiple airports in the state, including Belagavi and Mysuru, in addition to Hubballi. The project stands out not merely for its scale, but for its integrated approach to regional sustainability, extending green energy benefits to upcoming terminals and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
The plant is projected to generate over 11 million units of solar electricity annually and offset an estimated 215,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over its lifecycle, offering a long-term hedge against escalating energy costs and carbon liabilities. The accolade comes at a time when India’s aviation sector is under increasing pressure to transition toward decarbonised operations while maintaining rapid growth. The recognition bestowed upon Hubballi underscores a turning point where regional airports, often overlooked in sustainability conversations, are emerging as laboratories of innovation. These decentralised models of clean energy adoption offer scalable blueprints for similar projects across Tier-II and Tier-III cities in India, aligning with the national objectives to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. The project’s ability to serve multiple airports not only elevates its economic efficiency but also enhances resilience in regional air infrastructure.
What sets Hubballi’s journey apart is its ability to leverage renewable energy not just as a compliance measure but as a strategic asset for long-term operational efficiency. The Platinum Recognition signals more than just technological prowess—it is a testament to the intent and foresight of institutional stakeholders who are championing environmental accountability without compromising on connectivity or passenger growth. For travellers and communities in Karnataka, this achievement affirms that sustainability need not be a distant ambition but a present-day reality built on collaborative vision and execution.
As global aviation reorients itself amid climate imperatives, India’s regional airports like Hubballi are proving that clean energy transitions are viable, scalable, and economically sound. In doing so, they are not only reducing their environmental footprint but also reinforcing India’s global standing in sustainable infrastructure development. With plans underway to expand such initiatives, the Hubballi model may soon inspire a nationwide green runway towards equitable, inclusive, and environmentally secure urban growth.
