The Indian government inaugurated the Anji Khad Bridge on June 6, 2025. This landmark project marks India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, symbolising a blend of modern engineering and regional development. Spanning the Anji River, a tributary of the Chenab, the Anji Khad Bridge stands as a testament to India’s engineering capabilities.

With a main span of 290 metres and a total length of 473.25 metres, the bridge is designed to withstand the region’s seismic activity and extreme weather conditions. Its construction involved innovative techniques to navigate the challenging terrain of the Pir Panjal mountain range . The Anji Khad Bridge is a crucial component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which aims to provide all-weather rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. This 272-kilometre rail line, featuring 36 tunnels and 943 bridges, is expected to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration .

The completion of the Anji Khad Bridge is poised to boost tourism and economic activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Enhanced rail connectivity will facilitate smoother travel for pilgrims and tourists, promoting local businesses and industries. Additionally, agricultural products like apples and dry fruits, along with traditional handicrafts such as Pashmina shawls, can now be transported more efficiently to national markets . Coinciding with the inauguration of the Anji Khad Bridge, the Vande Bharat Express was launched, connecting Katra and Srinagar. This high-speed train is engineered to operate in extreme temperatures, providing a comfortable and efficient mode of transport for passengers. The introduction of this service marks a new era in rail travel within the region.

The Anji Khad Bridge stands as a symbol of India’s commitment to modernising infrastructure and fostering regional development. Its completion not only enhances connectivity but also paves the way for economic growth and cultural exchange in Jammu and Kashmir. As the region embraces this new chapter, the bridge serves as a reminder of the nation’s engineering prowess and dedication to progress.
