India’s First 16 mw Solar Cycling Track Opened in Hyderabad

Hyderabad has unveiled its pioneering 16 mw solar cycling track, an eco-friendly
infrastructure project. This 23 km , three-lane cycling track, known as Healthway,
marks a milestone in sustainable urban development and renewable energy
integration.

The solar cycling track is the first of its kind in India and only the second globally,
following South Korea’s solar rooftop-covered track. This expansive track is
accessible 24×7 to cycling enthusiasts.

Healthway comprises two lines: the pink line spans 8.5 km from Nanakramguda to
the Telangana State Police Academy (TSPA), while the blue line covers 14.5 km
from Narsinghi hub to Kollur.

The solar cycling track includes five access points that provide various amenities,
such as car and bicycle parking, food stalls, cycle repair and rental stations, first
aid stations, rest areas and signaling systems.

One of the remarkable features of this track is the installation of 16,000 solar
panels on its roof, generating 16 mw of solar power. This clean energy supply will
significantly reduce electricity costs for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development
Authority (HMDA). The 16 mw power can illuminate 32,000 street lights or cover
800 km of street lighting.

The track’s lighting is strategically positioned to enhance the cityscape while
ensuring that cyclists can enjoy the track 24/7 throughout the year. Closed-circuit
television cameras (CCTVs) are connected to the Cyberabad police command
centre for round-the-clock monitoring.
