Indias Data Centres Face Severe Climate Change Risks By 2050 As Per Report

A new report has issued a stark warning: over 12% of India’s vital data centers are highly vulnerable to severe infrastructure damage from climate change-induced extreme weather events by 2050. The analysis, conducted by the Cross Dependency Initiative (XDI), underscores an urgent need for resilience planning in a sector critical to the nation’s burgeoning digital economy.

The “2025 Global Data Centre Physical Climate Risk and Adaptation Report” assessed nearly 9,000 operational, planned, and under-construction data centers worldwide, including 228 in India. It evaluated their exposure to eight climate hazards under a high-emissions scenario. The report flagged Uttar Pradesh as one of the most at-risk locations globally, with over 61% of its data centers projected to face high risk by mid-century. Other significantly vulnerable regions include Maharashtra, Telangana (Hyderabad), Karnataka (Bengaluru), and Tamil Nadu (Chennai)—all major hubs for India’s expanding data infrastructure.

By the end of the century, the climate risk to India’s data centers is projected to more than double, increasing by 111%. This escalating threat, stemming from events like floods and rising sea levels, can severely disrupt services and lead to substantial financial losses. The report emphasizes that while India is a leading data center hub expecting billions in investments, this growth must be complemented by robust adaptation strategies.

According to the report’s founder, targeted measures such as modifying building designs and incorporating structural reinforcements could significantly reduce the number of high-risk data centers. However, adaptation alone is insufficient; the report stresses that comprehensive decarbonization efforts are also essential, as data centers rely on surrounding infrastructure, which is equally susceptible to climate hazards.
