Indian Shipping Industry Records Major Growth in Cargo Handling

The Indian shipping industry has grown significantly in the past year, with major ports handling a record-breaking 795 million tonne of cargo in 2022-23. This growth reflects the country’s continued progress in infrastructure development and modernisation.

The Shipping Ministry has also surpassed its asset monetisation target by securing transactions worth about INR 5,000 crore, exceeding its goal of INR 3,700 crore for FY23. This is a positive indication of the country’s economic growth and development.

Sarbananda Sonowal, the Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister, is launching ‘Green Port’ guidelines to promote environmentally sustainable practices in India’s ports. This demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and underscores the country’s focus on addressing global challenges such as climate change.

Major ports like Deendayal, Mumbai, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam have contributed to this growth. With continued investment in infrastructure and sustainable practices, the industry is poised for even greater success in future.
