Indian Railways Urges Passengers to Wear Masks Amid COVID-19 Surge

As COVID-19 cases rise across India, Indian Railways has issued a nationwide advisory urging passengers to wear masks during train journeys.

This measure aims to mitigate the spread of the virus and other respiratory illnesses, ensuring the safety and well-being of commuters. The advisory, disseminated through official social media channels including X, Facebook, and Instagram, encourages mask usage, hand hygiene, and the use of sanitizers. “Planning a rail journey? When travelling by train, make sure you wear a mask to minimise the risk of serious infections and ensure a safer journey,” stated the Northern Railways’ X handle.

The advisory emphasizes that masks not only provide protection against COVID-19 but also help prevent other contagious respiratory illnesses such as the flu, cough, and cold. Special attention is drawn to vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, highlighting the necessity of mask adoption for their safety. In addition to the mask advisory, Indian Railways is intensifying its cleanliness protocols across railway premises and trains nationwide. Regular cleaning and sanitation drives are being conducted on platforms, in waiting rooms, and within train coaches. Public address systems are being used to broadcast hygiene and health guidelines to passengers, reinforcing the importance of maintaining cleanliness and adhering to safety measures.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported 3,395 active COVID-19 cases in India as of May 31, 2025, with 26 deaths recorded since January 1. While the numbers remain relatively low compared to previous surges, the increase in cases has prompted Indian Railways to take proactive steps to safeguard public health. Passengers are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to the recommended safety measures, including wearing masks, practicing hand hygiene, and following cleanliness protocols. These efforts are crucial in ensuring a safe and secure travel experience for all.

For more information and updates, passengers are encouraged to follow official Indian Railways social media channels and stay informed about the latest advisories and safety guidelines.
