Indian Railways is gearing up to handle the influx of millions of devotees visiting Prayagraj. A key part of this preparation is an ambitious project aimed at eliminating level crossings by elevating railway tracks, which will significantly ease traffic congestion in the city.
The collaboration between Indian Railways and the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation has led to the construction of several Rail Under Bridges (RUBs) and Rail Over Bridges (ROBs) throughout Prayagraj and its surrounding areas. The removal of level crossings will improve the flow of both vehicular and train traffic, offering much-needed relief to locals and visitors alike. This infrastructure overhaul is not a last-minute fix; many of these bridges were part of the upgrades made during the last Kumbh Mela in 2019. However, with the upcoming Maha Kumbh expected to attract even more visitors, the remaining projects are being fast-tracked to ensure completion before the event begins.
A total of seven ROBs, costing an estimated Rs 375 crore, have already been completed. Three additional RUBs are in the final stages of construction, with cementing operations set to begin soon. These new developments will not only ease traffic congestion during the event but will also continue to benefit the city’s residents long after the festivities end. For those attending the Maha Kumbh, which will run from January 13 to February 26, 2025, this upgraded infrastructure means smoother and safer travel. More than 10,000 trains are expected to operate without interruption, ensuring a seamless experience for devotees and enhancing safety on the tracks.
Beyond the religious significance of the Maha Kumbh, the event has become a catalyst for significant industrial growth and commercial development in the region. As Prayagraj transforms into a hub of activity, these vital infrastructure improvements will play a key role in accommodating the city’s growing demands. Indian Railways’ commitment to easing traffic and enhancing safety underscores the importance of forward-thinking infrastructure in managing large-scale events. As the countdown to Maha Kumbh 2025 begins, these developments promise to make the event a smoother experience for all.
