Indian Railways to Deploy AI Based Machine Vision System in Groundbreaking Safety Upgrade

Indian Railways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) to implement an AI/ML-powered Machine Vision-Based Inspection System (MVIS). This agreement marks the first-ever deployment of machine vision technology for rolling stock health monitoring in the Indian Railways network.

Under the terms of the MoU, DFCCIL will take charge of procuring, installing, testing, and commissioning four MVIS units. These systems will be strategically placed wayside along the tracks, where they will autonomously capture high-resolution images of train undercarriages as trains pass by in motion. The MVIS technology then processes these images using advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to detect safety-critical anomalies like hanging, loose, or missing components.

By generating real-time alerts upon spotting mechanical defects, MVIS ensures faster response and preventive maintenance, drastically reducing the risk of accidents, derailments, and service disruptions. More importantly, it also significantly cuts down on the burden of manual inspections, which are both labor-intensive and prone to human error.

This AI integration is part of a broader Indian Railways initiative to transition toward smart infrastructure, where predictive maintenance replaces reactive fixes, and where safety protocols are governed by intelligent, automated systems. The partnership with DFCCIL not only leverages cutting-edge innovation but also reflects a strategic shift in how the country’s vast rail network plans to handle growing freight and passenger volumes with precision and resilience.

With this pioneering implementation, Indian Railways moves one step closer to becoming a global model for digitally-driven, future-ready transport ecosystems.
