Indian Railways Reaches Net Zero Emissions by 2025

Indian Railways has achieved its net-zero carbon emissions target in 2025, five years ahead of the original 2030 goal.

This accomplishment underscores the national transporter’s commitment to environmental responsibility and positions it as a leader in green transportation.

The significant reduction in emissions is primarily attributed to the extensive electrification of the railway network. As of 2025, over 90% of the railways’ traction energy comes from electric sources, with plans to increase this to 95% by 2029-30. This shift has led to a substantial decrease in direct greenhouse gas emissions, with a projected reduction of 2.2 million tonnes of CO2 by the end of the year. Beyond electrification, Indian Railways is diversifying its energy sources to further reduce its carbon footprint. The strategy includes sourcing 3 GW of renewable energy, such as solar and hydropower, and 3 GW from thermal and nuclear power by 2030. Additionally, the railways are exploring partnerships with power distribution companies to meet the remaining energy requirements.

The transition to electric traction has also resulted in significant cost savings. The expenditure on diesel fuel is expected to fall to ₹9,528.53 crore in 2025-26, marking the lowest projected spending in over a decade. This financial benefit complements the environmental advantages, demonstrating that sustainability can align with economic efficiency.

Indian Railways’ achievement is a testament to the effectiveness of comprehensive electrification and the adoption of renewable energy in reducing carbon emissions. As the nation continues its journey towards sustainable development, this milestone serves as an exemplary model for other sectors and countries aiming to combat climate change.
