Indian Railways Opens Premium Single Brand Outlets via E-Auction Across Stations

Indian Railways is set to introduce premium single-brand outlets at major stations, aiming to elevate passenger experience while boosting non-fare revenue. Officials confirmed that these outlets will be allotted through an e-auction system, aligning with existing commercial policies, and will not follow a nomination process. The initiative seeks to provide airport-style retail options, integrating high-end brands and lifestyle products within station premises.

The Ministry of Railways instructed zonal and divisional offices to identify prime locations for such outlets based on footfall, space availability, and passenger demographics. Officials clarified that a dedicated segment for “Premium Stores” will be created within the e-auction module, allowing successful bidders to select the brands they wish to showcase. The outlets are expected to enhance station ambience and reinforce Indian Railways’ image as a modern, passenger-focused service provider. This move follows proposals from the South Central Railway, which highlighted the ongoing redevelopment of stations under the Major Upgradation and Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). Officials noted that these redevelopment efforts, targeted for completion during the 2025-26 financial year, provide an opportunity to integrate premium retail offerings, similar to airport terminals. Experts emphasised that such commercial integration could generate significant additional revenue for the railways while improving passenger convenience.

Under the new guidelines, outlets will cover diverse non-catering categories, including travel accessories from recognised brands, premium apparel, footwear, sports gear, and lifestyle products. Officials highlighted that each contract will include special conditions tailored to individual station requirements, ensuring alignment with passenger needs and site-specific characteristics. Experts suggest that the initiative represents a strategic approach to monetising high-traffic stations while offering passengers access to premium products during travel. By linking retail allotments to e-auctions, Indian Railways ensures transparency, competitive bidding, and a standardised commercial framework across zones. The scheme also aligns with broader urban development goals, providing sustainable commercial use of railway real estate while enhancing overall travel experience.

Officials further stressed that these outlets should maintain aesthetic and functional harmony with station architecture. The focus will be on sustainability, energy efficiency, and inclusivity in retail design. Analysts believe this approach could serve as a model for integrating commercial innovation into public infrastructure, benefiting passengers, retailers, and the national railway network alike. As Indian Railways continues modernising stations and expanding passenger amenities, the rollout of premium single-brand outlets demonstrates the railways’ commitment to innovative, revenue-driven, and passenger-centric infrastructure solutions. The initiative is expected to be phased in across multiple zones, reflecting a systematic push towards modern, high-quality station environments.
