Indian Railways has marked a new milestone in freight modernisation with the launch of its first container train service offering a guaranteed 120-hour delivery. Operated in partnership with the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), the service promises assured transit between Delhi and Kolkata, directly challenging the dominance of road freight along this busy corridor.
The pilot project, rolled out this week, has introduced a bi-weekly train connecting the Inland Container Depot at Tughlakabad in Delhi to the CTCS terminal in Kolkata. Travelling via Agra and Kanpur, the service provides a fixed five-day transit time, making it the first of its kind in India to offer such predictability. Officials explained that the service has been designed to provide shippers with the reliability long associated with road transport, while reducing costs and environmental impact. Trains will depart every Wednesday and Saturday, offering businesses greater certainty in planning cargo movement.
A hub-and-spoke cargo aggregation model has been integrated at Agra and Kanpur, enabling consignments from surrounding industrial hubs to feed into the service. This is expected to expand its reach, particularly for manufacturers and exporters who rely on dependable supply chains. To further encourage adoption, CONCOR has announced a waiver on empty wagon haulage charges between Tughlakabad and Kanpur, a move aimed at reducing logistics costs for customers. Transport experts said the assured service could be a game-changer for time-sensitive cargo such as electronics, perishables, and retail goods. By offering predictable delivery, railways are positioning themselves as a competitive alternative to highways, where freight traffic has traditionally been concentrated. The service also underlines India’s push towards more sustainable transport solutions, with rail freight contributing significantly lower emissions compared to trucks.
Railway officials stressed that the initiative is not just about faster movement but about reshaping freight logistics for the future. The success of this pilot will determine whether similar assured transit services can be rolled out on other high-demand freight corridors across the country. Early adopters of the service are also expected to gain a first-mover advantage, as the model is scaled up. For India’s logistics sector, where predictability, cost efficiency, and sustainability are becoming increasingly critical, this development represents a strategic shift. By combining rail’s traditional cost-effectiveness with guaranteed delivery schedules, Indian Railways is positioning itself as a serious competitor to road transport while reducing congestion and carbon emissions.
