Passengers who have opted for auto-upgrade during the booking process are considered for this facility.
Upgrades are limited to a maximum of two class levels. For instance, a passenger with a confirmed Sleeper Class ticket may be upgraded to Third AC, and from Third AC to Second AC, depending on availability. However, upgrades to First AC or Executive Class are restricted to one level below, meaning a passenger with a confirmed Second AC ticket may be upgraded to First AC, but not from Third AC. To avail of the auto-upgrade facility, passengers must opt-in during the ticket booking process by selecting the “Consider for Auto Upgrade” option. If no preference is indicated, the system defaults to “Yes,” making the passenger eligible for upgradation.
The selection process is random and managed by the Passenger Reservation System (PRS). It considers various factors, including the availability of vacant berths in higher-class coaches and the passenger’s booking status. Importantly, the system ensures that upgrades are made without any additional charges to the passenger. With the introduction of the auto-upgrade policy, the Current Booking (CB) facility in higher-class coaches such as Chair Car (CC), Third AC (3A), Second AC (2A), and First AC (1A) is likely to become unavailable. The CB facility, which allows last-minute bookings, will continue to be available for Sleeper Class and Second Sitting (2S) coaches.
