Indian Railways launches Amrit Bharat Express 3.0 enhancing affordable quality travel nationwide

Indian Railways is preparing to launch the Amrit Bharat Express 3.0, a new generation of trains aimed at redefining affordable rail travel while providing high-quality services across India. Designed to balance cost-effectiveness with passenger comfort, the upgraded trainsets will cater especially to lower-income and middle-income groups, reflecting the government’s broader push towards accessible, sustainable, and inclusive transportation.

The Amrit Bharat series, first introduced in 2023, has already demonstrated a strong demand for low-cost, high-capacity trains. With eight routes currently in operation, these trains connect smaller towns with major urban centres such as Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. Railway officials note that the introduction of Amrit Bharat 3.0 represents a step forward in both scale and sophistication, combining air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned coaches to serve diverse passenger needs. Unlike its predecessors, Amrit Bharat 3.0 will feature dual-class arrangements including general, sleeper, and air-conditioned compartments, alongside modernised pantry facilities. This balance between affordability and comfort, according to experts, is crucial for addressing India’s growing mobility demand without excluding economically weaker sections.

Beyond accessibility, the latest trainsets place emphasis on sustainable design and passenger safety. Officials confirmed that the new rakes will incorporate energy-efficient systems, modular toilets, semi-automatic couplers, and enhanced braking technology. Inspired by the operational efficiency of the Vande Bharat Express, continuous LED lighting and ergonomically designed seating are expected to significantly improve the travel experience. Capacity has also been scaled up, with each rake designed to carry nearly 2,600 passengers. This expansion is part of Indian Railways’ strategy to move more commuters by rail, reducing dependence on road travel, cutting vehicular emissions, and contributing towards India’s zero-carbon urban agenda. By promoting a modal shift to rail, experts argue, the network not only improves convenience but also helps tackle congestion and pollution in cities.

Officials have also announced plans to manufacture and operate 100 Amrit Bharat trains over the coming years, extending affordable travel deep into semi-urban and rural regions. Such expansion is expected to strengthen social equity, as improved connectivity allows easier access to education, healthcare, and job opportunities. At the same time, the trains are projected to drive domestic tourism, enabling cost-sensitive travellers to reach cultural, religious, and leisure destinations more comfortably. Industry analysts suggest that the wider roll-out of Amrit Bharat 3.0 will have far-reaching economic impacts. Increased passenger flows will stimulate local markets, boost regional tourism economies, and improve overall productivity by reducing travel times. For a country where rail remains the backbone of affordable mobility, these innovations mark a decisive step in modernising infrastructure without compromising inclusivity.

With Amrit Bharat 3.0, Indian Railways is signalling its intent to build not just faster trains, but a fairer, greener, and more connected future for millions of Indian travellers.
